Speach by the Vice President of the Republic of Bulgaria – general Angel Marin

TO THE PARTICIPANTS AND ORGANIZERS OF THE
6th EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENT FESTIVAL
“GREEN WAVE – 21ST CENTURY”
KARDZHALI, BULGARIA, 16 - 18 September 2011

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,

It is my pleasure to congratulate the participants in the 6th European Environment Festival “Green Wave – 21st Century” - leading European and global media, experts and representatives of the sciences and the arts – on their productions in the area of ecology and environmental issues.
I would also like to congratulate the organizers of the festival - the European Environment Festival Foundation. Through their activities, they bring environmental risks to the attention of the public, along with ways to protect the environment. Congratulations also to the municipality of Kardzhali, a partner and host of the event.
Human society consistently and inevitably interacts with the natural environment. The human species is a part of nature and nature is an inseparable part of its life. Throughout its development, humanity has never until now placed itself at such a great risk to its survival by destroying the natural environment. The wise man said: “Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realize we cannot eat money”. How apt these words are today. As a result of human activity in the environment around us, there are now exceptionally serious problems with a host of negative consequences. Humanity now faces a dilemma: either to protect what's nature provides in order to survive, or to allow an environmental disaster with unpredictable dimensions and consequences.
With this in mind, the various environmental initiatives we have seen since 2005 - environmental festivals, an Olympic Forest, the Green Cinema: Environment Film Week, Round tables, Children's Drawing Contests “Green Planet” – have a great significance in informing the public about your vital cause for saving the planet. It is wonderful that the Festival has turned into a traditional meeting of professionals in various fields, uniting their ideas and efforts in finding solutions to environmental problems.
I believe that the films and television programmes which will be presented during the European Environment Festival “Green Wave – 21st Century” will contribute to enhancing an environmental culture and, particularly, will put forward solutions and measures which countries and non-governmental organizations undertake to solve ecological conflicts.
I wish the festival every success!

ANGEL MARIN
VICE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF BULGARIA
