Annotation: The oldest hieroglyphic drawings that mention Axum, depicting incense, myrrh, ivory, and slaves, date back 4,700 years. It must have been an oasis abounding in water. The name Axum means “The Fountain of the Princes”.  The “Kebra Negast” – “The Book of the Glory of Kings” - is a 14^th century manuscript which is both a national epos and the key source of Ethiopian national identity. It states that the Ethiopian royal dynasty is descended from King Solomon and from the “Queen of the South”, the Queen of Sheba. Ethiopians believe that the Queen of Sheba has lived in Axum. There are many interesting sites in Axum. The “Grave of the Dragon” can be visited, like many sites which popular belief attributes to certain figures in the national epos – like, for example, the Bath of the Queen of Sheba. The greatest puzzle in Axum are the huge obelisks. Up to thirty metres high, each is carved from a single, giant block of granite. They crowned graves. Axum is the historical and religious center of Ethiopia. A mythical place that carries many secrets. The deep religiousness and national pride of the Ethiopian people has its roots in Axum.

Annotation: Based on anthropological research conducted over twenty years, this film documents the lives of Quechua people who live around Ausangate, a sacred peak in southeastern Peru. Four Quechua people’s stories are told against a backdrop of high Andean lakes and mountains showing a harsh existence possible only through a strong symbiotic relationship to their alpacas and llamas. From these animals they gain food, pelts, dried dung for fuel, transport for goods, and yarn for clothing. They maintain a deep integrity through their interconnectedness with the natural forces and their ritual relationships to Ausangate, and they still organize their labor and social relationships through the Inca social practices of ayni and ayllu. The film includes women revitalizing weaving techniques within mother’s clubs, first haircutting rites of passage, and the annual pilgrimage of Qoyllur Rit’I, which occurs annually near Ausangate – drawing participants from distinct communities throughout Peru and Bolivia. Qoyllur Rit’I is the only Andean pilgrimage/festival where drinking is not allowed and dancers known as ukus stand all night on the 15,000-foot-high glacier so they may have the privilege of taking a chunk of ice from the mountain that is later melted and drunk by their community as sacred water. Faced with the pressures of modernization, Quechuas are confronted with choices about whether to move to the cities in search of jobs and educations – thus separating themselves from nature and from Ausangate – or to continue in a lifestyle that has sustained them for centuries.

Annotation: In reality the formation of Killer Lake is due to other circumstances. It is presumed that 230 million years ago, in the Mesozoic the triassic-jurassic-liassic formations of the Eastern Carpathians were covered by sea. After the rise of the earth’s crust, a huge chain of mountains was formed whose multi-layered soil was loosened by an earthquake in 1830. In June 1837 during the cloudbursts the soil and the debris, sliding from the ”Killer” Mountain closed the bed of the brooks rushing down in the valley. Due to this natural dam a large lake came into being and swallowed up the forests of the valley.
Every year thousands of tourists come to admire Killer Lake. Even today the water surface crowned by the surrounding mountains can be a unique view for those who are tacking around among the tree-trunks. The underwater forest is an unforgettable sight.

That’s where the last soot factory worked in order to serve the tyre factory of the country until the beginning of the 1990s. Kiskapus became famous by its negative statistics. It has been the most polluted settlement of Romania. The soot factory could not survive the year 1989, but the metallurgical works were privatised. The environmental pollution hasn’t changed. Incidence of saturnine poisoning makes several hundreds per year. Average age of the population is nine years behind the national average.

Annotation: The people of the ancient empire Koguryo believed in a life after death. They built burial mounds for their aristocratic persons and decorated them inside with beautiful frescoes. These frescoes tell tales of an empire that existed from 37 BC to 668 AD and was one of the most powerful in East Asia: Koguryo. The Burial Mounds frescoes are extremely lively. The show everyday activities, food, clothing and architecture. They also show soldiers and martial arts scenes. The empire had to be defensive and needed a large army to protect itself. The North Koreans today see their roots in the Koguryo Empire. In their eyes it was a warlike realm with a powerful army that solved problems of its own accord. The capitol of North Korea is built on the ancient Koguryo capital.  A wooden city gate, the Potong Gate, still indicates the course of the city wall during the Koguryo era. The North Korea state is very proud of its cultural heritage. The tombs and sites are well preserved and protected.

Annotation: Last Season is a portrait of the ground fish trawler “Isabel S.” from New Bedford, Massachusetts. Jeff, the captain, learned fishing from his father, local legend 'Fearless Freddy' Hatfield. Brian, the cook, is a biker and a recovering alcoholic. Lo, the deckhand, is a refugee from Vietnam who has rediscovered Buddhism.
The film crew accompanies them to the once-ample fishing areas of Georges Bank and the Nantucket Shoals, where they haul in nets and do the backbreaking and bloody work of hand-cutting thousands of pounds of cod and other fish on a pitching trawl deck.The environment on the boat emerges as a social microcosm. Captain Jeff, the son of an esteemed local captain, is at the top of the order, and Lo, who arrived in the U.S. after a harrowing escape from a Viet Cong jail, is at the bottom.
Fishing is a complicated and sometimes deadly business. Detailed knowledge of the ocean floor and the habits of fish is crucial to success. But, as Captain Jeff acknowledges as the Isabel S. returns with its catch, “sometimes a lot of it is a little luck.”

Both proposed sites have aboriginal communities living within 10km of the sites (also one is 40km from Alice Springs - one is 100 km).The film will focus on the Aboriginal people living traditionally on the lands ear-marked for dumping sites. How do they feel about their homelands becoming a "dump"? What do they understand about the plans to store uranium? What do they know about uranium? And, most importantly, how will this affect their lives, their lands, and the generations to follow?Steve McCormack (Anmatyerre, Luritja, Western Arrente) lives 5km from Hamilton Downs Youth Camp, towards Alice Springs. The Pearce family lives at the corner of the Stuart and Tanami Highways. Both families live on their homelands surrounding the 1st proposed uranium storage site 40kms outside of Alice Springs.At the second proposed site, Alcoota, we'll talk with the young, up-and-coming leader of the area Jessie (Alyawarre and Eastern Arrente) and his family. Alcoota contains many sacred sites and dreaming stories that travel from north of Utopia and are shared amongst various cultural groups. It's a place with very complex networks of relationships with surrounding nations; any uranium depositing on this site affects many other people as well as those living directly on the dumping ground.This film will promote language and culture to show the audience that the land is not “useless” or barren wasteland. We will see that the land sustains families; the land feeds and heals. Traditional bush tucker has fed generations, the beautiful landscape supplies medicines, and these traditional homelands hold ceremonial rights, dreaming stories and sacred sites. These lands are homes, not dumps.

This half hour documentary explores the relationship between Jessie, a shy 18 year old girl and her outgoing and mischievous grandmothers: Mijili, Nancy and Kumanjayi. This is a film about sexuality, relationships and culture set in an extremely isolated location, Lake Mackay. Lake Mackay is a huge salt lake located on the border of the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Throughout the film the audience learns about the incredible lives led by the three old women who did not make contact with white civilisation until the 1960’s. Two of the women were married to Jessie’s grandfather at the same time; they were co-wives. The women speak openly about their own experiences of love with a great amount of humour and honesty. A central theme in the film is jealousy, and much of the lessons and discussion focus on ways in which to deal with this intense emotion. The women also tell Jessie about the ‘coming of age’ ceremonies which indicated to the community that they were ready to be taken as wives.The film delves into many interesting details about traditional love, marriage and relationships. It offers unique insight into the Pintupi lore systems as deciphered by Jessie as she begins to understand where she fits in.

Annotation: Isan is one of the poorest regions in Thailand. Long periods of drought during the dry season alternate with heavy rainfalls in the monsoon period. In the North East, close to the border with Laos, lies the small village of Bahn Sarng-Sang. Here rice, the staple food, is readily served with an insect garnish. Pi Lee, one of the best cooks of the village, knows several different methods of preparing local insect specialities. But the use of bugs in Bahn Sarng-Sang is not just limited to food. Pi Lee and her family also use insects for the preparation of cosmetics and medicine. While adult red ants help to cure small skin lesions, their nest has a tonic effect when squashed. Agricultural labourers often use it for refreshment while working in the fields. In fact, an insect remedy exists for almost every ailment.
Insects even play an important role in entertainment. While children like to tie long threads onto Rhinoceros beetles and fly them like  

miniature living planes, or decorate rice straw boxes with the metallic wings of woodborers; the adults often enjoy a spot of beetle or cricket fighting.Here, more than in other Thai regions in the North East, traditional Buddhism blends with animistic elements and superstition. In fact Pi Lee and her friends are convinced that several insects bring good luck, while others are considered to be a symbol of „Kalum“, a bad omen, whose negative influence must be banished with a special ceremony.For Pi Lee and her family beetles, bugs and Co are present of Phra Ya Than, the great creator of all living beings. They are more than just food, medicine or pastimes. They influence the daily life of the people of Bahn Sarng-Sang in many different ways, and are an important element of their culture and social life.The film joins Pi Lee, her family and the inhabitants of Bahn Sarng-Sang in their daily life with insects.

This film is based on a true story known as «Birds from the Balkans Affair». By the end of 2001, the smuggling of killed protected birds to Italy was cut off from the Balkan peninsula. On the Italian border 120702 frozen birds were taken, and among them the most numerous were the small, song birds, protected by law. All the killed birds were intended for the pleasure of guests in luxurious Italian restaurants.

Annotation: In this film we see how countries in the Middle East are beginning to confront the stark reality of too many people and too little water. We first travel to Jordan, a country that is experiencing a severe water shortage, which will only get worse because the country has a population growth rate of about 2.9%, the 9th highest in the world. In Damiya village a new initiative has started to get the officials and users together in an effort to solve the water problems and developed realistic strategies. In Egypt, we visit Beni Suef, one of the poorest governorates in Egypt to find out their approach to solve issues in the irrigation sector. Beni Suef's more than 2 million people constitute 3.2% of Egypt's total population most of them farmers. But demand for irrigation is high. Farmers are desperate. We meet them in a collage of different perspectives on the problem with irrigation. Here too the water users have started to discuss their water problems with government officials at district and governorate levels to come up with solutions. In Palestine we travel to Maithaloun to find Mustafa who has developed an innovative project to use the local plain for water harvesting that will provide drinking water and irrigation water for local agricultural production. He discusses his idea with local officials and manages to turn it into a viable municipality project.

Rattenberg town that is hidden between the high mountains of Tyrol does not receive any direct light during the winter. Part of the population has already left the town, there are several abandoned houses found here, and people suffer from the short of sunshine during the winter. Being tired of the situation the mayor ordered a company to make sunshine return in the settlement. The company intends to enlighten the Tyrolean settlement using large mirrors by which they would direct natural light to the town.

Despite being surrounded by water, residents on the island lived almost land-locked lives due to the then-prevailing political climate. After the lifting of martial law and massive changes in social structure, Taiwan residents returned to the sea only to find the marine environment afflicted. "The Squid Daddy's Labor Room" is a documentary film that depicts the moving story of people returning to the ocean, discovering the issues, engaging in introspection, and taking actions to make amends. A marine conservation team led by conservationist Kuo Tao-jen has built the first-ever breeding ground for oval squids in the Northeast Coast of Taiwan, one that integrates marine life restoration, research, education, tourism, and industry values. Yet the society-at-large are mostly unaware of the sacrifices, frustrations, and conflicts encountered by Kuo and his team during the process. As the fishermen celebrate their abundant catch, the technology and concept behind the breeding ground, as well as the story of this group of simpleton-volunteers, are also being recorded.

Annotation: Wat Pa Luangta Bua is a monastery of meditation, situated far away from any civilization, about 200 kilometers west of Bangkok, and here, silence, peace and harmony reign. Every afternoon, a daily ritual is observed - nonchalant Buddhist monks take their ten 3-5 year old tigers out on a leash for a walk through the bordering region of Burma. They dote upon their tigers, feed them and celebrate them as their most sacred animal. There are few monks living in the monastery of Wat Pa Luangta Bua. Each monk takes care of one tiger and the number of tigers increased to ten since two orphaned tiger cubs took refuge in this isolated temple in 1998. The temple of the monks in the forest of Sai Yok was declared a tiger reserve area by the Thai government. This documentary portrays the harmonious relationship between predators and humans without disregarding the monk’s maxim that “a tiger will always be a tiger, even if it feeds from the hand. It will always be a wild animal.”

Annotation: Racadau district of Brasov has been visited every night by bears that live in the nearby forest. The unexpected guests have been attracted by the garbage cans. Since the phenomenon has been going on for decades now, the beasts have accustomed to the vicinity of humans, and therefore, local inhabitants cannot feel safe around their homes. It has already happened several times that bears attacked passers-by, who had provoked them. Annotation: The German research vessel METEOR recently completed a geological expedition off the coast of Central America. The expedition’s main goal was to investigate fault lines where movement occurs between the Earth's tectonic plates. It is hoped the results will provide a greater understanding of the processes, which lead to earthquakes, Tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. This three-part series not only takes us to the ocean's unexplored depths, but also reveals the daily workings of a research vessel.
In part one, a deep-sea robot dives to depths of 200min search of gas discharges, bacterial mats and sediment samples. In episode two, after the mission’s deep-sea robot has completed its last dive, the ship heads for the port of Caldera. The exhausted researchers with their samples in hand, are replaced by a new team equipped with a high-tech deep-sea drill.In the final episode of the series, the Scottish team put their deep-sea drilling equipment into action. The geologists nervously wait for the first samples to come to the surface, when suddenly computer failure strikes.

The population of Malko Tarnovo town and other villages in the mountain is small but hospitable and is always ready to feed the tourist and give him a shelter. There are ancient traditions and rituals such as Eniovden and "Nestinarka" fire dancing kept alive and shown in the film.

Annotation: The film represents the natural and biological diversity of one of the most beautiful but still not very popular regions in Bulgaria - the situated in Eastern Rodhopy "Varchi doll" reserve. The viewers will look at the eyes of the mountain - the abrasive wells and will become acquainted with the small Phoenix-flower. But the most trilling is the meeting with the inhabitants of the valley - the vultures. The valley is one of the three habitats of the vultures in Europe.
